The Stair Society’s 2026 Annual General Meeting will be held in the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh on Saturday 14 November 2026 by courtesy of the Faculty of Advocates.
For members, the business part of the meeting will take place from 10:30 to 11:00 am, after which tea and coffee will be served prior to the Annual Lecture.
At 11:30 am Lord Hodge, former Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, will give the Annual Lecture. The title of his presentation is ‘Lord Sands: a Parliament House career in the early 20th century’.
The lecture will discuss Lord Sands’ wide ranging professional life, including his style of writing in his pleading as counsel and his judgments, analyse several of his most interesting judgments, and address his wider interests in politics and Scottish culture and his central role in facilitating the reunion of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929.
The lecture is not restricted to members of the Society, but non-members wishing to attend are asked to advise the Secretary in advance of their intention to attend. Non-members can do this by emailing: stairsociety@gmail.com.
